Robert F. McGuirk, Esq., CFP®
A small practice built around the places where legal documents and money actually meet. Located in Albany, but serving all counties.

I started out as a financial advisor, at large firms and small ones. The same thing kept happening. I would build a plan with a client, reach the part where the legal documents mattered, and hand them off to an attorney. Then I would watch a sound financial plan and a sound estate plan fail to line up with each other.
So I went to law school instead of continuing to make the referral.
I am admitted in New York and in Florida, and I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. That combination is uncommon, and it is the entire point of this practice. Most of what families own now sits in retirement accounts, and those pass by beneficiary designation, outside the will, under tax rules that have nothing to do with estate law. Drafting documents without understanding the accounts produces plans that are technically correct and practically broken.
What I do here is legal work: wills, trusts, asset protection, probate, retirement division orders, and planning for the cost of long term care. This firm does not manage investments or give investment advice. What the financial background lets me do is explain the money side in language that makes sense, and work alongside your financial advisor and your accountant so the three of us are not building three different plans.
I would rather be the person you call when something changes than the person who handed you a binder once. Most of my clients come back when something happens: a house sale, a divorce, a diagnosis, a new grandchild. That is how this is supposed to work.
What to expect from me
You deal with me
The person who answers the phone is the person who drafts your documents and the person who signs them. That is a deliberate choice about the size of the practice, not a temporary condition.
Flat fees, no hourly billing
Fees are quoted before you retain, wherever the scope allows it. You should know what something costs before you decide whether you want it, and calling with a question should never cost you anything.
Evenings, and mostly remote
Consultations are available in the evening, and most matters are handled by phone, email and mail. QDRO and probate work is done in all 62 New York counties without requiring you to travel to Albany.
You will know where things stand
You get copies of what I send and what comes back, and an update when something moves, without having to chase me for it. A good deal of this work involves waiting on plan administrators and courts, and not knowing what is happening is the worst part of it. I would rather tell you there is no news than leave you wondering.
A deliberately focused caseload
I work in four areas and keep the caseload focused enough to do them well. That means I turn down work, including work I could technically handle. It is also the reason you are not waiting a week for a callback and your matter finishes when I said it would. If I am not the right fit for what you need, you will hear that on the first call rather than three weeks in.
